NW Alternative School
Northwest School of Innovative Learning
The Northwest School of Innovative Learning (NWSOIL) is an alternative school program designed for students from kindergarten through high school who are unable to function safely in their regular school setting.
A full academic program is provided, along with therapeutic treatment tailored to the individual student. NWSOIL has been in operation at the Kirkland Hospital site since January, 2000, and in Tacoma since September, 2002. The School is approved through the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction as a non-public agency (NPA). NWSOIL provides a comprehensive and therapeutic program that helps meet the special education, behavioral health and psychiatric needs of students from school districts throughout the Puget Sound area.
Program Features:
- Full-day programming Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
- Year-round school schedule is available
- Separate programming for primary, middle, and secondary school students
- Educational screenings and academic status assessments
- Individualized Education Plan (IEP) coordination with each school district
- Transitional program available to reintegrate the student into the regular school district classroom
Additional Services:
- Weekly family and individual therapy
- Daily therapeutic recreation groups
- Medication monitoring
- Meetings with psychiatrist
- Coordination with outpatient treatment providers
Funding: The services provided to our students by NWSOIL may be funded by local school districts, if approved by the student’s home school district.
