Adult Inpatient Acute Detoxification
For more information, please download our Adult Acute Unit Handbook.
Detoxification is the process of withdrawing a person from addictive substances. Detoxification occurs naturally when the substance is denied to the body for a period of time and can be both uncomfortable and dangerous. However, under hospital supervision, detoxification can be controlled and safe. Inpatient detoxification can take from one to seven days and precedes rehabilitation treatment.
Inpatient Treatment
Fairfax Hospital utilizes a symptom management approach to detoxification. Treatment is available for
- Alcohol
- Opioids (OxyContin, Heroin, Oxycodone)
- Benzodiazepines (Valium, Xanax, Ativan, Klonopin)
Our Acute Detoxification Program begins with a complete physical exam and Chemical Dependency assessment by our clinical staff. Nursing and Physician care is focused on minimizing the discomfort associated with detoxification while ensuring patient safety through 24 hour observation and monitoring patient vital signs. As the patient stabilizes, integration into program groups, discharge planning and post detox recovery treatment options are considered. This level of Fairfax staff assistance helps the patient begin the process of restoring physical and emotional health.
When appropriate, Buprenorphine is available for both opiate detoxification and induction of maintenance care.
This symptom management approach utilizes the dispensing of appropriate oral medications to treat reactions such as nausea, diarrhea, muscle cramps, anxiety and insomnia. Medically managed detoxification reduces the medical risks and discomforts associate with a withdrawal.
Beyond Detoxification
Fairfax Hospital’s Chemical Dependency Treatment Services provides a broad range of Chemical Dependency recovery services. These include:
- Inpatient and Partial Hospitalization Dual Diagnosis Treatment
