Teen Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Get your teen the support they need to manage emotions, navigate relationships and build the foundation for a healthier future.

IOP for Teens: Why Choose Fairfax Behavioral Health?

The Fairfax Behavioral Health teen intensive outpatient program (IOP) gives your teen structured mental health care while maintaining their routine. The IOP is a flexible option for adolescents ages 13-17 who need more support than they get with weekly therapy.

Your child lives at home while attending the program. Many teens also continue attending school during the program, giving them the chance to apply the skills they learn in real-world scenarios.

Teens attend our IOP for three hours a day, three days a week. We recommend attending for eight weeks to help your child get the most out of the program.

Highlights of our program include:

  • Dialectical behavior therapy focus: DBT provides practical skills in mindfulness and emotional regulation. Teens learn how to cope with distressing times and find healthy ways to interact with others.
  • Teen-centered care: Your child works with healthcare professionals who understand the specific needs of adolescents. Our program focuses on helping your child develop the skills to manage school, family and friendships in ways that feel authentic to them.
  • Coordination with schools: We work with your child’s school so they can focus on healing without falling behind. We help prepare them for school after treatment.
  • Flexible treatment options: Your teen can participate in our evening virtual and hybrid programs, which help them stay in school while receiving treatment. Our virtual care includes services for people in rural parts of Washington, Oregon and Alaska.
  • Help for everyone: We value everyone. We support and affirm LGBTQ+ teens. We’re also neurodivergent-friendly and present learning materials in various formats to accommodate different learning styles.
  • Family involvement: We encourage you to participate in your child’s care. We can set up family meetings to keep you involved and help you learn new ways to support your child’s mental health and your own.

What to Expect With Our Intensive Outpatient Program for Teens

During the intensive outpatient program, your teen participates in a variety of therapy, education and skill-building programs. We design days so they’re both therapeutic and engaging.

Your teen’s days in IOP include:

  • Group therapy: Teens share and connect in a supportive setting.
  • Psychoeducation group: These groups help teens gain essential life skills, including how to set boundaries, communicate and cope with difficult situations.
  • Skills group: Teens practice what they learn through role-playing and hands-on activities.
  • Regular meetings: Your teen meets one-on-one with a clinician to discuss their progress and challenges.
  • Medication management: We offer medication options for kids who need it.

Teen partial hospitalization

For young people who need a greater level of support, our teen partial hospitalization program (PHP) offers a five-day option. We can recommend the program that is most appropriate for your child.

Mental Health Treatment for Teens From Military Families

Building relationships can be tough for kids in military families. Frequent moves make it harder to establish attachments and make friends.

Our virtual intensive outpatient program for teens with military parents helps kids learn how to build a sense of community and resilience. Through shared experiences, your teen can discover ways to make connections, no matter where they are in the world.

The leader of this program is a clinician with a military background who understands the unique nature of life in the service. Learn more about our mental health services for military and first responders.
