Teen Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

Your child gets the mental health support they need and the real-world skills to cope with life’s challenges.

Partial Hospitalization Program for Teens: Why Choose Fairfax Behavioral Health?

We’re here if your teenager is having difficulties. The Fairfax Behavioral Health teen partial hospitalization program (PHP) helps young people discover the best in themselves.

With our focused, hands-on program, teens 13-17 can learn ways to cope with the changes and challenges that come with growing up. Teens attend the program during the day and return home for nights and weekends.

Each teenager has different needs, motivations and experiences. We work closely with your family to understand your child and design a personalized treatment plan tailored to their needs.

Our teen partial hospitalization program runs for five hours a day, five days a week. Most teens attend for three to four weeks to get the most out of the program.

Highlights of our program include:

  • Seasoned staff: Your child’s providers include therapists, nurses, recreation therapists, psychiatrists and others who understand the needs of young people. We use that knowledge to develop specialized therapies and programs to keep teens interested and engaged in their treatment.
  • Coordination with schools: The PHP program requires time away from school for most kids. We coordinate closely with school counselors and staff to help your child transition back into the learning environment.
  • Care for complex mental health conditions: We have the resources and healthcare professionals to care for teens with complex needs.
  • Help for everyone: We value everyone. We support and affirm LGBTQ+ teens. We’re also neurodivergent-friendly and present learning materials in various formats to accommodate different learning styles.
  • Flexible treatment options: We offer virtual and hybrid programs to fit your child’s needs. Our virtual care includes services via Starlink for people in rural parts of Washington, Oregon and Alaska.
  • Family involvement: Families are an important part of a teen’s treatment plan. Your support and understanding can help your child. We facilitate family meetings and can recommend resources for parents’ well-being.

What to Expect With Teen Partial Hospitalization

Mental health treatment for teens is a process. Improvement happens over time. Our goal is to equip your teen with the skills and tools they need to return to their daily life.

During the partial hospitalization program, your teen participates in a variety of therapy, education and recreational programs. These programs help them develop practical skills, build self-awareness and learn to manage their emotions. If your child needs medication, we monitor and adjust it as needed to help them.

Your teen’s days in PHP include:

  • Group therapy: Adolescents share and learn from their peers.
  • Psychoeducation group: Teens learn about healthy boundaries, effective communication skills and ways to cope with difficult situations at school and home.
  • Skills group: Participants practice what they learn using role-playing and other methods.
  • Expressive therapy: We offer art, music and recreation therapy.
  • Weekly meetings: These check-ins with their case manager or therapist help us stay on top of their care.

Teen intensive outpatient

Young people who need mental health care but don’t require a five-day program may benefit from our teen intensive outpatient program (IOP), a three-day-a-week option. We can recommend the program that’s most appropriate for your child.
